A Talk with The Rolled Up Sleeves

By: Mariam Elhamy

A band that plays for Linkin Park, Coldplay, Maroon 5, Kaleo, Michael Jackson, Imagine Dragons, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Scorpions, and Breaking Benjamin is definitely on our rock music radar! We caught up with The Rolled Up Sleeves to see for ourselves how the band got together and what sparked their love for rock.

Make sure to watch our video with the band below!

Who are The Rolled Up Sleeves

Youssef El Ouri: When I first started I was doing solos, then a friend of mine asked me why I hadn’t started a band yet and I liked the idea of having my own band so we started brainstorming then he came up with the name and I thought it was very rock n’ roll so we went with it.

I won the AUC talent show twice in a row. On the second year, I met Mounir and we won it together! Later on, we both met Belal, then we all went our separate ways and reunited again in 2016. That’s when we met Bassel Wadid and Mohamed Waleed.

A love for Rock and Roll

Mounir: I used to listen mostly to metal music then rock came into my life bringing with it blues, and country music, and that’s how I fell in love with it.

Bassel: Rock is the most interesting genre I’ve played drums in, I fell into it 10 years ago.

Youssef: I used to listen to both pop and rock and I like them both. I listen a lot to Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and Michael Jackson, who was a huge influence to me.

Belal: When I first started out, I used to play different genres from Western to Eastern, Jazz, and Blues. I play bass guitar, so I‘ve tried everything! However, rock music had always had a special feeling; a sort of powerful feeling that’s different than any sort of music I’ve ever played.

Mohamed: I’ve listened to classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles since I was young. I consider rock music to be a huge leap in the history of music. I especially love playing guitar, which is the main instrument in this genre.

who writes the music?

Youssef: Mounir and I mostly write all of our music and Belal has contributed in a few songs. Our inspiration is faith and love.

inspirations and legends

Mounir: If I have to pick one then it’s Metallica.

Bassel: Same, it’s Metallica.

Youssef: In the pop genre, I love Michael Jackson! As for rock, it’s Linkin Park.

Belal: The Scorpions.

Mohamed: Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, who I consider the god of music.

Favorites to play

Mounir: My list of favorite songs that I listen to is endless so it would be hard to pick just one. I really like playing a song called Just a Man.

Bassel: It would be hard to pick my favorite song to listen to. Out of our originals, I love playing a song called Not a Fairytale.

Youssef: My all-time favorite song to listen to is called Father and Son by Cat Stevens. Out of the songs we play I really like Just a Man too.

Belal: My favorite song to listen to is Wind of Change by Scorpions. Out of our originals, a track called Mercy and it’s very special to me.

Mohamed: My favorite song to listen to is Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd and from our originals, I like playing Mercy.

highlights in concert

Youssef: Last year when we played at Etisalat Battle of The Bands, which was our first exposure as a band to more than 3,000 people in the crowd so it was very exciting.

Belal: Today is our first time playing at Darb 1718 and we hope that it becomes our favorite place to play, but we’ve mostly played at The Tap Maadi so it’s become a special place for us, and as Youssef said, our favorite concert was the one with the big crowd at Etisalat Battle of The Bands.

what the future holds

Youssef: We’re not signed by a label yet, but we record our own music and most of it is on our Youtube channel and Soundcloud.

Youssef: We love writing and composing music and we want to share it with the world, that’s our dream.

Ahmed Shawqi

Born in 1868, Shawqi was known as The Prince of Poets‎ due to his status as one of the greatest Arabic poets to ever put pen to paper. He is considered one of the greatest Egyptian poets and dramatists, having pioneered the modern Egyptian literary movement, and inspiring a slew of poets to come.

Shawqi’s literary works can be divided into three main periods of his life. The first chunk of his works consist of eulogies to the Khedive, praising him or supporting him. The second period is during his exile in Spain, where his feeling of nostalgia and sense of alienation affected his work and resulted in many patriotic poems about Egypt and the Arab world. The third and final part of his works revolves about the glorious history of Ancient Egypt and Islam, which result in several religious poems in praise of the Prophet Muhammad.

#NoSmokingDay: 21 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Smoking

By: Mariam Elhamy

“Smoking Kills” – we’ve heard it a million times and we’ve seen it everywhere, but does it actually change the way we think about smoking? Here are some interesting facts we bet you didn’t know about smoking that will blow you away!

Did you know that in Egypt, there are 34,000 tobacco-related deaths each year according to statistics by CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports? On a global scale, around 5.4 million deaths a year are caused by tobacco use. According to statistics by the state-run Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, in 2013 the number of smokers in Egypt reached 13 million people out of a population of 90 million!

In Egypt, nearly 60% of men use tobacco in some form, according to the World Health Organization. Egyptian smokers spend 8 billion pounds annually on smoking, constituting 22% of the monthly income per individual.
As for shisha, most people think they are less harmful than cigarettes … however, “one hour with a water pipe is equivalent to something between 100 and 200 cigarettes,” said Dr. Fatima el-Awa from the World Health Organization’s (WHO) regional office.

North Africa Health: Spotlight on the Healthcare Industry

By Arab Health Magazine Staff

Amongst the North African countries, Egypt formulates the biggest demand in healthcare development. The Egyptian healthcare market continues to grow, primarily due to demand from the continuous increase in general population (expected to reach 151 million by 2050), and, specifically, due to a gradual increase in the elderly population (from the current level of 7.8 per cent to 15.3 per cent by 2050), as well as increase in health insurance coverage.

Every year, Egypt reportedly needs a minimum of 2,500 to 3,500 beds (1.5 to 2 beds / 1,000 population), resulting in a requirement of an additional 26,000 to 77,000 new beds by 2020 (and between 102,000 to 178,000 new beds by 2050), a considerable increase, thus offering ample investment opportunities in the country’s healthcare sector.

Keeping in mind this need for growth, Informa Exhibitions, the organisers of Arab Health Exhibition & Congress, have launched North Africa Health, which is set to take place from April 6 to 8, at the Egyptian International Exhibition Center (EIEC), situated in New Cairo. The full-scale exhibition will gather decision makers and professionals in the medical field from various regions under one roof and will be complemented by a diverse range of educational content.

The 12th edition of North Africa Health (previously Mediconex) will expand its visitor audience to include key buyers, dealers, distributors and healthcare professionals from the whole North African region. The expo will host over 3,000+ attendees, 150+ leading international and local companies from 20 countries showcasing the latest in medical device technologies and healthcare services, 154 product categories, and three Continuing Medical Education (CME) accredited conferences that will provide insights into the latest clinical and non-clinical healthcare trends in the market. These accredited conferences and hands-on-training workshops will provide the opportunity for growth in multiple fields.

Visiting North Africa Health is sure to be a beneficial experience for all dealer and distributor job functions – from senior management of larger organisations that are looking to connect with key industry players, sales and business development professionals tasked with expanding their product portfolios and entrepreneurs hoping to source the next ‘big product’ to supply in their country. With 20 manufacturing countries to choose from, choice is one thing that will not be lacking when it comes to business opportunities at the show.

Furthermore, professionals who are tasked with purchasing and procurement responsibilities for healthcare facilities, educational providers and medical specialty associations, can use North Africa Health as a way of starting each new year efficiently. Using the show as an opportunity to get ahead of the upcoming year’s product needs, they can scope the full variety of options available and take part in detailed discussions with key influencers from manufacturing companies to secure the best deals.

Exploring Latest Trends

As a leader in the healthcare industry that emphasises the importance of innovation, North Africa Health will ensure that several avenues are available throughout the show for healthcare professionals to foster connections. It also provides insights into the advancements of the healthcare industry.

The CME conferences will take place across all three days of the show and will cover different disciplines.

The Egyptian Society for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine (ESRNM) will be hosting their 55th annual conference during the show. With the opportunity to network with a range of professionals in the field of radiology, the delegates will receive a holistic educational experience achieved through live education, debates and discussions. In turn, this meeting will fast-track advances in radiology that will benefit patients, clinics, hospitals and the healthcare community.

Plus, as part of the Laboratory Medicine Conference, the Egyptian Society of Laboratory Medicine (ESLM) will also be hosting their 30th annual edition of the ESLM conference. It is one of the biggest yearly events for medical laboratory professionals in Egypt, as well as across Africa. Spanning over three days, with two parallel sessions, the programme will showcase a multitude of topics featuring international and local speakers.

The theme of the conference is ‘Breakthrough to Excellence’ and will feature scientific lectures examining the latest findings in laboratory medicine, allowing for ample time to network and discuss new developments with experts in the field. The event will also host poster sessions situated throughout the exhibition hall, providing a great opportunity to learn more while visiting the exhibition stands.

Furthermore, joining North Africa Health for the first time is the American College of Surgeons – Egypt Chapter who will be hosting their annual conference and will feature a mix of surgical sessions. As a new addition, this cutting-edge scientific programme will address the important developments in the field of surgery.

The first day will focus on ‘Women in Surgery in Africa’, highlighting the work achieved, and run by women exclusively. This session will feature an expert from the American College of Surgeons, as well as members from the Women in Surgery Africa (WiSA) association. The other sessions will cover a wide variety of topics ranging from gastric to endocrine surgery.

9 Powerful Egyptian Women Who Made Magic Happen

By: Mariam Elhamy

We all know how tough it is being a woman in Egypt. People’s expectations about our body, behavior, language, education, work, and even friends make it impossible not to be judged and criticized. It is especially hard for a woman to make it in Egypt with the constraints that our society puts on a woman’s freedom.

Everything is controlled starting with where she goes, who she meets and what she wears to whether she’s allowed to travel on her own, work late or even make her own career choices and not follow her parent’s expectations. But even though it’s hard, women all over the globe are breaking free and proving themselves worthy of the same positions and salaries that men have.

We’ve dedicated this article to show off many examples of powerful Egyptian women who made it despite all the limitations and obstacles. We are all very proud to witness such great examples of how willpower and dedication can achieve anything! To all the females out there, Happy Women’s day!

Amany Khalil

Amany Helmy Khalil, proud mother of 2 children, finished The Ironman Triathlon held in Barcelona, Spain, and came in 21st in the 50-54 age category. She made a career shift to fitness from economics and banking after she got married and had her first child and showed up in the Egyptian athletic world at a relatively late age, while also caring for her two children and her husband.

Powerful achievement:

  • Amany Khalil became the first Egyptian woman above 50 to compete in and finish the triathlon race, which consists of a 3.86-kilometer swim, a 180.25-kilometer bike ride and a 42.20-kilometer marathon run.

Nancy Ali Hassan

As the Founder and Managing Director of Hedeya Children Stores, Nancy had a tough journey starting out as an entrepreneur in the Egyptian market, but she ran the operation on her own for a while. Currently, Hedeya has many branches in Cairo and Alexandria and has become a thriving online business.

Powerful achievements:

  • Single-handedly founded a store that sells everything from baby clothes and toys to accessories and strollers.
  • Created more than 8 successful branches in Egypt
  • Started one of the few online stores that were open in Egypt

Azza Fahmy

Azza Fahmy is one of the best examples of women who broke the norms and set out after their dreams. After she completed her bachelor’s degree in interior design, she decided to learn the trade from those who know it best – the skilled masters and craftsmen in Khan El-Khalili! This was completely against society’s rules at that time. She was the first person to create jewelry and key chains with engraved verses of poetry and Arabic writings. Her designs proved to be uniquely original and show the Egyptian heritage.
