Hugo Bar and Kitchen in Guezira Plaza, Sheikh Zayed

We love settling back into the city vibe when October rolls around. There is always something new and interesting to discover. We knew we had uncovered a treasure when we chanced upon the recently opened Hugo Bar and Kitchen. A perfect spot to meet up with friends for an after work drink, with mouthwatering nibbles and attentive service.

Type of Cuisine & Signatures Dishes

Hugo offers international cuisine, with a focus on appetizers and sharing plates.

Signature dishes include the Salmon Crostini, House-smoked Herring, Ossobuco, Hugo’s Rustic Fillet, Lobster Spaghetti.

Dishes Sampled

On our midweek visit we popped in for an after-work drink and bite to eat. Something simple. But with the mouthwatering appetizers and sharing platters on offer, we found ourselves indulging beyond our initial expectation. Our cocktails arrived in a flash; Maria is Lost delivered a chili punch to fire up the taste buds, and Passion Show came with whispers of passion fruit, raspberry and pineapple.

Opting to share various plates, we kicked off with Arugula Salad, fresh, green and loaded with mushroom, Parmesan cheese, walnuts, cherry tomato and sweetcorn. It was a well-balanced, healthy combination. Next came the Salmon Bites, perfectly grilled cubes of salmon with Teriyaki Sauce, Grilled Chicken Skewers with a tangy barbeque sauce, and dainty Grilled Sausages soon followed. They were all so easy to dive into, not leaving much space for the signature dish, Hugo’s Rustic Fillet.

But when it arrived, impressive in its simplicity, we couldn’t hold back. Slender slices of impossibly tender fillet of beef, cooked to a perfect point and lightly bathed in a dreamy herbed butter jus, accompanied by the best mashed potatoes we have ever tasted and finely chopped spinach, who could resist?

Which left us with the question of dessert. Should we or shouldn’t we? Time had flown, and we really should have been hitting the road. But the idea of Crème Brulée and Date Tart put aside any doubts in a moment. Both were stellar, which comes as no surprise, considering owner and manager George Bouabjian’s credentials as a Swiss-trained pastry chef.

With a return visit already on the cards, this new venue has won us over completely. Chapeau!

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

Ossobuco, Chicken Roulade, and who wouldn’t love the Lobster Spaghetti, made with a whole lobster for a special occasion?

There is a full bar, an intriguing range of cocktails, and juices and soft options for those who prefer.

Décor & Ambience

Cosmopolitan, contemporary and chic. Hugo Bar and Kitchen works equally well as a meet up venue for friends, for an after work unwind session, or a date night with someone special. The area is divided into a semi-enclosed terrace for dining, and the interior bar area with a choice of high, low or bar seating. Lighting is ambient, and the dark charcoal and smoky grey toned interiors offer privacy. We loved the plush use of velvet here and there, especially with the vibrant aqua green pops of color. Classy without pomp, the vibe is just right. The music compilation is at a level that allows conversation to flow easily, although it may amp up a bit as Thursday night heads into Friday.

Clientele mix: Upper 20s and over: groups of friends and couples. Based on our experience, this is a place where ladies on a night out would feel totally comfortable.

Price range: Moderate and upwards. Let it be noted, that although sharing plates are intended for two, we are sure that the generous portions could easily be shared by more.

Worth noting: Shisha is available on the terrace area. A projection screen is available to cover big matches as well.

Crave’s Whole Wheat Pizza

Pizza’s reputation as a high fat, unhealthy food is not based on the crust. Pizza dough is relatively low in fat and calories. When the dough is made from whole-wheat flour, you gain complex carbohydrates, fibre and essential nutrients.

Basics

One slice of whole-wheat dough from a 12-inch pizza has 136 calories, 25 grams of total carbohydrates and 2 grams of fat. The carbohydrates are almost entirely complex carbohydrates from whole-wheat flour. Some pizza dough recipes call for honey, but it is such a small amount that the sugar in once slice would only amount to 1 or 2 grams. One slice of whole-wheat dough also has 5 grams of protein.

Fibre

Pizza does not have a reputation as a source of fibre, but a slice of whole-wheat pizza dough has 4 grams. That represents 10 percent of the recommended daily intake of fibre for men and 15 percent for women.

Minerals

The whole-wheat flour in pizza dough is a source of iron and magnesium. One slice of plain dough provides 16 percent of the recommended daily intake of iron. Also, it helps maintain a steady heartbeat and regulate blood pressure. One slice of plain whole-wheat pizza dough delivers 12 percent of the recommended daily intake for magnesium.

B Vitamins

Whole-wheat pizza dough provides all of the B vitamins except for vitamin B-12. Most of the vitamins come from whole-wheat flour. Thiamine, riboflavin and niacin are all essential for the chemical processes that turn food into energy. Niacin also lowers cholesterol levels, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. One slice of whole-wheat pizza dough contains 20 percent of the recommended daily intake of thiamine, 12 percent of niacin and 6 percent of riboflavin. You will gain 12 percent of your daily requirement of vitamin B-6 and 7 percent of folate from a slice of dough.

Ingredients

For wheat pizza dough:

  • 3 cups whole-wheat flour (360 g)
  • 1 to 1.25 cups water or add as required
  • 1 ½ teaspoons instant yeast, or 2 teaspoons dry active yeast
  • ¼ teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Some whole-wheat flour for dusting

Pizza toppings:

  • Pesto Sauce: Blend 2 cups fresh basil leaves (about 1 large bunch), 3 cloves garlic, 1/2 cup pine nuts, or walnuts, ½ cup olive oil
  • Buffalo cheese
  • Grilled aubergine
  • Colored bell peppers

Dough preparation:

Combine the water, yeast and sugar in a small bowl. Set aside for 5 minutes or until foamy. Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the yeast mixture and oil. Use a round-bladed knife in a cutting motion to mix until the mixture is combined. Use your hands to bring the dough together in the bowl.

Brush a bowl lightly with oil. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Place in the prepared bowl and turn to coat in oil. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm, draught-free place to rise for 30 minutes or until dough doubles in size.

Dust work surface with flour. Knead dough and form into a long cylinder. Divide into thirds. Use a rolling pin to roll each third into a 20cm disc, then add your toppings and bake.

Fyonka, the Secure Way for Ladies to Get Around Cairo!

Just what we had been waiting for, a handy transportation service with women drivers, for women. We had a chat with Co-Founder Abdallah Hussein to get the lowdown.

When was Fyonka launched and how many drivers did you start with?

AH: We officially launched our service during February 2019. At the time, we started with a fleet of 24 partners. In five months, we were able to grow our fleet by quadruple that.

What prompted you to start Fyonka?

All three of us partners are childhood friends. We travelled to London for our university degrees and something that instantly struck us was the prominent role females play in British society. Females can work any job or be whatever they want to be. There were no restrictions. After finishing our studies, we all came back to Egypt. Ride hailing platforms were just starting in the country and were on the rise, however, something that really stuck with us was the lack of females in the industry.

As we dug deeper we found that the barriers of entry for females in this industry are very high, i.e. the safety aspect of the job or the cultural and social view that would come with the job. On the other hand, as these ride hailing giants grew, the quality of their service deteriorated. Female customers were craving a safe and reliable service that would offer them peace of mind. And so, Fyonka was born!

How has the response been?

It’s been great! We’re actually overwhelmed by the support we’ve received. However, this is only the start for us. At Fyonka, we aim to build something so much more than a transportation service. We aim to initiate a women’s empowerment movement that would enable women to become architects of their future. No female should have any barriers to work any job and should not be held back from her aspirations to better her life and become independent. This is the real mission behind Fyonka and the community we’re trying to build around our service.

How can women book a ride?

Fyonka offers an on-demand all-female ride hailing service through our platform, which is available on both Play Store and the App Store. Ladies can book their ride through our app and a car will be there in an average of 15-20 minutes. It’s a fairly simple process, a car is three clicks away!

What areas do you cover, i.e. only greater Cairo or also trips outside?

We currently operate in ten areas across Cairo and Giza. We’re working our best to expand into new areas and new cities in the future. So stay tuned!

nextmove EGYPT TO PROVIDE EXCLUSIVE HOME BUYER INCENTIVES

2019 SHOW COMES AGAINST BACKDROP OF ‘BUYERS’ MARKET’ FUNDAMENTALS

Cairo, Egypt, 11 Sep 2019: nextmove Egypt, powered by Cityscape Egypt, – the dedicated consumer-based real estate exhibition devoted to property sales in Egypt – is to offer visitors a slew of exclusive show buying incentives from capital-focussed developers and those behind the latest green communities and compounds from upcoming locations in Greater Cairo, Alexandria and the North and East Coasts.

“The Egyptian market is now highly competitive, and the country’s leading developers will be at the show with special offers and exclusive payment plans only available to nextmove Egypt visitors,” explained Alexander Edwards, Exhibition Director. “For anyone looking for their first home, or climbing their way up the property ladder, the show represents a remarkable opportunity to research the market and leverage offers on new and affordable compounds, villas and apartments.”

The country’s most trusted developers are exhibiting at the show, which will run at the Egyptian International Exhibition Centre (EIEC) from October 17-19 against a backdrop of increased interest in a property market where prices have slipped but long-term potential remains high.

“For those who live in Egypt, the decline in prices makes houses more affordable, making it the right time to purchase. For those living abroad, depreciation of the Egyptian pound has increased the investment appeal with long-term investment potential remaining high,” said Faariss Khalil, Exhibition Manager. “There is a huge, real demand for housing in Egypt as the country’s population increases by 2.5 million annually and there are about one million marriages taking place every year.”

Visitors attending the free-to-enter show can explore opportunities with exhibiting developers including: Akam Developments; Master Builder Group (MBG); Amer Group; Real Mark; Zahraa El Maadi; Style Home; Residence (Aroma Sokhna); SAK Developments; El Attal Group; Castle Development; Kudo Insaat (El Masriya); TCI; Mardev; New Plan; Aqar Masr; The Land Developers; Egygab; and Home Town.

Next Move Egypt is powered by Cityscape Egypt, the country’s largest most established real estate event and conference on property development, which is organised by Informa Markets.

“The market fundamentals in the country have been nurtured by a string of government incentives which is increasing the investment potential of Egyptian real estate meaning the homebuyers required a dedicated showcase of its own,” explained Khalil.

The Egyptian government has been leading efforts to cover the gap between supply and demand by building new ‘affordable’ cities across the country including, New Fayoum City and New Aswan City while the Central Bank of Egypt plans to provide mortgage funding to the country’s middle class.

“The long-term prospects are extremely promising,” said Khalil. “Egypt´s housing market is widely expected to rise strongly in value in the coming years – and high-end real estate developments are booming to meet the increasing demand. nextmove Egypt represents a great opportunity to get in on the ground-floor of this potential.”

New Menu at Semiramis InterContinental’s The Grill

We couldn’t wait to sample the totally new menu at this iconic dining spot. It did not disappoint, as The Grill is known as one of the places to head to for fine dining in Cairo. Are you looking for a romantic dinner in Cairo? Read on!

Signature Dishes
The Grill offers French cuisine, from classic to contemporary. Wagyu and US Beef are signature dishes on the menu, but every dish has its own unique appeal.

Dishes Sampled
Our first bite came in the form of a dainty amuse-bouche. Just one little mouthwatering morsel of finely chopped fresh apple in something creamy, neatly wrapped in beef bacon. We could have happily demolished ten more, along with the selection of incredibly good signature bread rolls. Be warned; leave enough space for the great food that follows!

We shared a simple Garden Salad before our choice of Lobster Bisque and French Onion Soup. The salad was light, fresh and crunchy, with just a touch of dressing, leaving us keen for the heartier flavors of the soup. We know that the cuts of beef and lamb are always superb at The Grill, and with two size options, you can go with what works for your appetite. The US Fillet Steak in the smaller portion was still a very generous cut, and came cooked perfectly medium rare, as requested. We loved the variety of sides, almost a meal in and of themselves. The Potato Dauphinoise and Seasonal Vegetables complemented the impossibly tender steak, which also came topped with an oven baked head of garlic. The accompanying Sauce Béarnaise was a rich, decadent touch that brought it all together so well.

The Chicken Breast with Onion Marmalade and Feta cheese was also tender and delivered on flavor, as did the creamy mashed potato side. When it came to dessert, we couldn’t pass up on the Lemon Meringue Tart. From the sweet sharpness of the lemon curd, to the buttery biscuit base and the light foam of meringue, it served as fitting finale to a memorable meal.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

We would love to come back for the lamb, the duck, and quite frankly, more of the innovative side dishes.

Beverages available include a full bar with ample soft options as well.

Décor & Ambience

The Grill Restaurant & Lounge still retains its classic style. Yes, there are some edgy graphics on the walls, and the entrance could be anywhere from Tokyo to Paris, or New York. But, when you are ensconced at your table overlooking the Nile, you really do not need too many distractions. The adjacent lounge area has comfortable seating and is a pleasant spot for a pre-dinner drink.

Clientele Mix & Price Range

The Grill Restaurant & Lounge is perfect for couples, and groups of friends, and would impress as a business dinner venue.

Price range is high-end, but manageable.

Worth noting: The Grill is doing its bit for the environment. We loved the chic paper straws that came with our lemon juice.
