Café Jeandeau in El Gouna: Eclectic European Dining

Recently opened in August an exciting addition to El Gouna’s dining and social scene, offering sublime cuisine with phenomenal views over the Marina

Type of cuisine: Aesthetically pleasing European style dishes offer a choice which includes Italian, French, Spanish and English.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Although there are various main dishes, with new additions currently being created, Café Jeandeau offers a wide array of tasting dishes and ‘must try’ items include Octopus and a Mayonnaise and French Beef Tartare.

We were very warmly greeted by the owner Riccardo accompanied by his grandson Alexander. We started our evening with a Campari/Gin cocktail served in a margarita glass. When ordering cocktails from the menu in Café Jeandeau you are served with a complimentary selection of tasting options which on our visit included Quiche, Mozzarella Balls, Fried Onion and Potato Balls, Pasta in Breadcrumbs and Spanish Tortilla served with classic Thousand Island dressing.

Being guided by Riccardo we were served according to our preference of either meat or fish and enjoyed Tuna and Shrimp Tartare, which melted in the mouth. Jenevieve Veal in Jar – a unique concept which beautifully brought together mouth-watering meat with caramelized onions and potato, and Rainbow Chicken rolled with Parmesan and served with sautéed potatoes. We also enjoyed Grouper fish served with a fresh tomato topping.  Fresh bread baked in-house accompanied the wonderful array of food before us. A tantalizing Chocolate Parfait – a wonderful blend of dark chocolate and orange topped served with fresh orange slices – concluded our delicious dining experience.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

New dishes are in the process of being added to the appealing menu, we cannot wait to revisit Café Jeandeau in order to sample these new additions.

Café Jeandeau has an exciting range of beverages geared to suit all tastes. The cocktail menu in particular is extensive.

Décor & Ambience

Café Jeandeau has undergone an extensive programme of refurbishment and the design lends itself to being welcoming both in the summer and winter months.  Guests can enjoy the beautifully designed internal restaurant or relax and take in the stunning panoramic views of Abu Tig Marina.  There is a separate bar area to enjoy drinks and we particularly liked the fact that the kitchen has been designed to be visible to guests allowing you to view the Chef and his team preparing their culinary delights. Great care and thought has gone in to the opening of Café Jeandeau and staff training has been a major consideration.  It was pleasant to be served by both male and female team members whose knowledge of languages seemed impeccable. They also took great pride in presenting our food and drinks and giving us detailed descriptions of the same.

Clientele mix:

With plans for a Piano Bar in the near future, Café Jeandeau will stand out in El Gouna as being not only a unique dining experience, but with subtle entertainment to suit a discerning clientele.

Price range: With the exceptional quality of both the food and beverages on offer, we considered this to be incredibly good value for money.

Yau’s Asian Kitchen in Beverly Hills, Sheikh Zayed

When we caught wind of a restaurant offering organic, chemical-free, gluten-free Asian food, our interest definitely peaked! The owner of Yau’s Asian Kitchen is completely committed to offering clean and healthy Asian food for all diners, including those with food intolerances and allergies. Ingredients and substitutions are clearly marked on the menu, along with the establishment’s ethos and vendor list.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Signature dishes include the Dynamite Shrimps, Asian Short Ribs, Sweet Spicy Chicken, Singapore Spicy Shrimps, and the Mongolian Beef.

Our feast began with the Thai Shrimp Salad, two plump shrimp resting on a bed of crisp noodles and veggies tossed in a light and zesty dressing, followed by the Japanese fried wings and vegetable spring rolls. Both the fried appetizers were served in a gluten-free method of preparation and cooking. The crispy golden batter of the spring rolls was amazing, and certainly not at all greasy due to the restaurant’s care in switching out their rice bran oil frequently.

The deep-fried tempura battered Dynamite Shrimp arrived next with a delicious Sriracha sauce. The crispiness and lightness of the fried shrimp cannot adequately be described, it truly is a treat to indulge in fried food without a heavy or stodgy feeling afterwards. For our main courses, we tucked into the Thai Shrimps in Green Curry Sauce along with a portion of steamed rice. Delicately balanced with a very slight kick in the aftertaste, this is a very pleasant and flavorsome dish for curry lovers.

The Paka Pao is a traditional Malaysian rice bowl topped with seasoned minced meat, a fried egg and accompanied with peanut sauce. This hearty dish is authentic and perfect for those chilly evenings to come. A portion of Rice Stick Noodles came next, gluten-free, along with a tender Salmon Steak served with sautéed vegetables in soy sauce. Beautifully marinated, the salmon was soft to the bite and well worth a try for those of you who prefer a main as opposed to several appetizers.

We were incredibly stuffed, but easily convinced to try the Japanese Cheesecake for dessert which was incredibly delicious, we didn’t leave a single crumb on the plate.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

We’ll be back to sample Mongolian Beef with coconut rice, Singapore Noodles, Crispy Fried Chicken, and Bao Buns.

Beverages include a selection of truly delicious fresh juices, coconut milk, and kombucha. We sampled the coconut milk with orange and carrot, as well as the blueberry flavored kombucha.

Décor & Ambience

Yau’s mainly operates as a takeout and delivery restaurant, with a couple of small tables on the patio for those who wish to tuck into a quick bite on the spot.

Clientele mix: Delicious Asian food is for every age group!

Price range: Prices are above average due to the ingredients used, all the meats are hormone and chemical-free. All vegetables are organic and locally sourced, as well as high-quality rice bran oil.

Surf & Turf in Nile Towers Mall, Cairo

Located on the second floor of the Nile Towers Mall is a new concept in the Cairo casual dining scene, Surf & Turf. Based on a cuisine of seafood and beef, Surf & Turf offers an innovative alternative to the conventional local seafood repertoire. Co-owner and CEO Ahmed Attia’s passion for food took him to Italy, Spain, Portugal and Ukraine to study seafood culture and cuisine there.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Signature dishes include the Seafood Bisque, Surf & Turf Paella, Crab Gratin, Pink Salmon Pasta, and Sushi.

Diving right into a bowl of Seafood Bisque, our Surf & Turf voyage set sail. The bisque could easily be the best of its kind ever tasted in Egypt! A complex flavor profile gave way to the perfectly cooked varied seafood, and the rich, highly aromatic broth. Worthy of a seven-star restaurant, the bisque was the clear winner of the night! Or so we thought. Until plate after plate of blue-ribbon creations landed on our table.

Next came the panko-crusted Fried Calamari and Fried Shrimp, a winning golden crispy duo with perfectly cooked hearty-sized seafood inside, dipped in the accompanying tartare sauce or sweet-chili sauce, every bite was the ideal ratio of crunchy and tender.

It was then that the Crab Gratin scuttled onto our table. Tender crabmeat chunks nestled in a half-shell, lathered in a creamy, cheesy bechamel sauce, delighting us with melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Superb! After that warm and robust bite, we cooled our palate with a chilled Calamari Salad made of a generous portion of sautéed perfectly cooked calamari pieces – no rubbery pull here – arugula, and slithers of tomato in a light vinaigrette dressing.

Back to crustaceans, a grilled open lobster tail docked at our table, flanked by two grilled shrimp. This was yet another victor in what quickly became a procession of winners making their way onto our plates, then our tummies. The subtle seasoning allowed the authentic flavor of the sumptuous, rich, buttery, lobster meat to shine through and take center stage! Cue the applause!

With absolutely no room left to spare, we defied all logic and dug into a Surf & Turf Paella, saffron-infused rice, seafood, and sliced fillet covered in a saffron sauce and a bisque sauce. At this point we’d lost all abilities to articulate the slew of sensations running through us.

We took breaks between dishes sipping on tall glasses of the most refreshing fresh juice cocktails, ginger-green apple-lemonade and peach-lemonade.

Other Menu Items that Appealed

Our next visit will definitely entail a selection of sushi, Spaghetti Seafood, Calamari Potato Tagen, and Ringa Salad.

Décor & Ambiance

Think playful coastal seafood eatery in Greece. The color scheme is blue and white, a fish tank with live decorative fish is meant to put you in a sea-faring mood. Touches like hanging anchors, fishing nets, a miniature lighthouse and miniature sail boats add to the sea-side vibe. Fresh fish is on display on ice for those opting to make a fish selection for certain dishes.

Delivery: Surf & Turf caters to mall regulars and employees in the Nile Towers. A recent deal with otlob.com will facilitate delivery to Greater Cairo – Mohandessin, Giza, Zamalek, Manial, and Garden City.

Open 12 am to 12pm.

Cairokee’s Amir Eid in When We’re Born: “I thought acting would be fun … but it wasn’t.”

By Zainab AbdulAziz

Active on the music scene since 2003, Amir Eid has transformed over time into a musical beacon as the lead singer of the massively popular band Cairokee. Six albums later, Eid and lead guitarist Sherif Hawary, drummer Tamer Hashem, keyboardist Sherif Mostafa, and bass guitarist Adam el-Alfy have amassed a fan base, dubbed the Cairokee Empire, and are embarking on a sold-out European tour.

Eid was presented with an opportunity this year to take on an acting role in the musical When We Are Born, he enthusiastically took on the challenge. Bringing on board his bandmate Hawary to assist in the composition of the soundtrack, the film spins a narrative sung by Eid, playing a musician named Ahmed who is battling his father for control over his ambitions and chosen career track. We sat down with Eid after the film’s premiere at El Gouna Film Festival to discuss his first foray into acting and what the future holds.

CWM: This is your first acting role, what drew you to this film?

A.E: Definitely the music. The fact that I’d have the opportunity to write lyrics relating to particular scenes in a film was a totally new experience for me to try out. I think you enjoy life more when you are trying new things and learning! The idea I approached while working on the film was to customize the music to a certain color palate.

The acting part of the job came after all those factors. I was certainly curious. What is acting all about? I thought to myself it would be fun to try, but afterwards I didn’t find it that fun at all (laughs).

What was the hardest part of being on set as a first-time actor?

The hardest part was that I’m not an actor, (laughs)! It’s a different form of art, and it needs a lot of skills that I don’t have. I wasn’t confident, and I was always wondering whether I was doing a good job. I didn’t care about my image as Amir the singer being judged by the audience, but I definitely wanted to do a good job and not look like a bad actor on screen. I can’t really judge the experience properly just yet, but I think it was a good learning experience and I’m happy I did it.

You wrote original songs for this movie, what can fans expect from the soundtrack versus Cairokee’s music?

I’m always singing about my life and the things I see every day. What’s different about this soundtrack is I didn’t use my own experience as a basis for the lyrics, I used my imagination. It’s not my strong suit, but it was nice to delve into the movie world of fantasy for a change. It’s not really me, but it will be a nice change of pace for the Cairokee fans, I hope.

You play a musician in the film; did you find any commonalities between you and Ahmed?

Not at all, he’s the opposite of me! He’s from a privileged background, I’m not born into a rich family. He is a bit cowardly and unsure of what to do, always trying to please others rather than going after his dreams. In my own life, I’ve never been that guy. I’ve always known what I wanted and I did it, regardless of anyone else’s expectations.

The film premiered at the third edition of El Gouna Film Festival, what was it like watching yourself on the big screen?

When I watched the final result during the premiere, I could understand why so many people like acting. Watching the end product makes all the work and doubt worthwhile!

I loved attending the film festival, I’m a movie geek and a huge cinema lover. It was awesome watching movies from Morocco, Sudan, and so many interesting places. It’s great to have a cultural event like this to look forward to every year.

What projects are you currently working on?

My next project will be audio-visual, it will involve painting and the arts in a more direct sense. I’m working with an amazing artist and very good friend of mine named Mohamed Mostafa, he will paint concepts and I will make music to accompany it. He will choose a word or emotion, like for example “sadness”, and I’ll create music to accompany that painting and he will add another layer, then I’ll add lyrics and so on until the piece is complete.

When we finish the album, the launch will be in a gallery where visitors can walk through listening to the music on headphones while enjoying the accompanying art pieces. That’s my current obsession right now! I’ve always been so envious of Mohamed’s talent, so I’m so excited to be a part of it.

How about Cairokee, anything else fans can look forward to?

We’re working on a new album right now with an initial release date of August 2020, so stay tuned for that! In the meantime, we have a sold-out show happening in Paris next month, and we’re also playing in Berlin and London – we’re really excited about rocking Europe!

Barten in El Gouna: The ART of Fermentation

A very welcome addition to El Gouna’s dining scene, offering sublime cuisine with phenomenal views over the Marina, Barten has been reinvented under the new owners Karim Mekhtigian,  Nader El Darry and the Habashi brothers.

Type of cuisine: Aesthetically designed dishes are composed to reflect a chemical balance between a spectrum of taste elements. Asian influences are strong.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Every dish offers something unique, but ‘must try’ items include the outstanding Sesame Seed Crusted Tuna. Malaysian Head Chef Erfan is adding new dishes during the soft opening phase.

As soon as we had been warmly greeted by the attentive, and well-dressed service team we settled in and relaxed as our drink order was promptly taken. We were delighted when our Moscow Mule cocktails speedily arrived in stylish copper and stainless steel mugs. To our amazement these kept the ice frozen and our drinks cold for over an hour, just one example of how natural elements have been cleverly applied at Barten.  We were then presented with Barten’s take on amuse-bouche in the form of a Dashi Broth, served hot with an appealing flavor of chicken and herbs, served alongside a dish of fresh peanuts.

This was followed by an enticing array of ‘Prelude Dishes’ which included Shiitake Mushrooms, Edamame Beans, Armenian Sausage and Gyoza Dumplings filled with beef and served with wasabi sauce. With our taste buds incredibly tantalized, we were then served several ‘Processional Dishes’ including a melt-in-your-mouth fresh Sesame-Crusted Tuna, served with a soy, rice vinegar and wasabi dressing. We also enjoyed Japanese Himachi, which came served with a perfectly complementing sauce. Other dishes served within this course on the menu could have included Prawns, Herring and Confit de Canard.

We could have enjoyed a further course of ‘Recessional Dishes’ at this stage, which included Aged Cheeses and also a yoghurt based dish. Already feeling quite full and satisfied with our culinary experience, we opted instead for the ‘Postlude’ option of Chocolate. A somewhat unusual but beautiful dish served with white, milk and dark high quality chocolate on a bed of sea salt.

This course epitomizes the passion of the owners and chef alike in their wish to bring together a fusion of sweet, sour, acidic and salty throughout the entire menu

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

New dishes are still being added to the exciting menu, so we hope to revisit in the near future to immerse ourselves further in what Barten has to offer.

Barten has a full bar with some iconic cocktails that are worth exploring, along with soft options for those who prefer.

Décor & Ambience

Barten has recently been refurbished to an incredibly high standard and the owners have retained the restaurant name of Barten as it is a particular favorite of El Gouna’s founder, Samih Sawiris. It offers a stunningly designed internal bar area coupled with a large external seating area.

With a stellar location, diners are able to relax, enjoy and take in the panoramic view of both sides of the Marina. Cups and crockery at the restaurant are all proudly designed by co-owner Mekhtigian himself, once again displaying the desire for perfection.

Clientele mix: A discerning, gastronomically savvy mix of both El Gouna residents and visitors. Mainly 25+ with a taste for exceptional, innovative cuisine served with flair and panache.

Price range: Rather high end, but justifiable when you consider the quality throughout.

November Stars – 2019

By Maeri Frances

Yup, it’s Mercury retrograde season again. You know the drill. Back up computers, service the car, double check before you press send. All that stuff.  Remember, this is the right time to review and refine your existing plans and iron out any creases. Launching new ventures can wait until after the 20th.

P.S. Don’t forget to read your rising sign as well if you know it.

Happy birthday, Scorpio!

November in a Nutshell: Maintain your cool… if you can.

Pressure could gradually build up from the 5th onwards. Something or somebody may be pushing you to the brink, but losing composure is not really your thing. By the 19th you may be ready to be your most assertive self, and heaven help anyone who dares to cross you. Things go more smoothly after the 20th when Mercury goes direct again.

Aries

November in a Nutshell: Keep juggling and don’t drop the balls.

Get ready for a spot of conflict in your work/home balance around the 5th. Try not pull your partner into the fray as well. Who needs the agro! A break out of town could work wonders on the weekend of the 8th and 9th. Seek inspiration and sort out your priorities close to nature.

Taurus

November in a Nutshell: Don’t let people get under your skin.

As the month kicks off you may wonder why people around you seem so edgy. The mood builds up and by the time Mars blusters his way into your opposite sign of Scorpio on the 19th you will need to find ways to neatly sidestep confrontation. Actually, it could be perfect timing for a quick trip out of town as the month draws to a close.

Gemini

November in a Nutshell: Keep ‘em busy so you can chill a little…

There is a lot going on around you this month, a veritable whirlwind. With your ruling planet Mercury once again in retrograde until the 20th in your house of routine and work you would be best served by focusing on the day to day grind to avoid costly errors. Easier said than done, with so many juicy distractions, but at least make a solid effort.

Cancer

November in a Nutshell: Stress!

You may feel things piling up, with work, relationships and family all vying for your attention. The period around the 5th is particularly touchy, especially if you are in contact with Aries, Libra or Capricorns. Burn off tension and stress by amping up your physical activity after the 20th. A good punching bag works wonders.

Leo

November in a Nutshell:  Things get busy around the home front!

Family matters jump into the picture in a new way. This could trigger a burst of activity around the home, with some work being done quickly. Try to be patient with family members, even when things face delays or conflict with your personal preferences. Curb your sharp tongue!

Virgo

November in a Nutshell: Money, money, money?

Expect to have a busy month, with most of your energy directed towards generating additional income.  The first week could be a headache as bills come rolling in, so be as organized as you can. It will be easy to overlook details with Mercury retrograde fusing your little grey cells. The last ten days of November promise some relief.

Libra

November in a Nutshell: Things can only get better.

The early days of November could challenge you on multiple levels. Things you say could be taken the wrong way, and tiffs could arise out of the blue. In short, the less you say, or write, the better. Your best course of action is to keep your head down, your opinions to yourself and get on with what has to be done. Boring? Maybe, but safer…

Sagittarius

November in a Nutshell: Let’s keep things upbeat

You don’t always let your deeper, more philosophical side shine through, and although you can be seen as bit heartless at times, this month you need to support your buddies. Your particular brand of wisdom may seem a little ‘one size fits all’ but this month a few kind words of any sort will help to lift spirits. By month’s end you should feel great.

Capricorn

November in a Nutshell: Step by step…

Frustrating as it may seem, you need to take things at a measured pace. You may find that people let you down, especially during the first three weeks. Double check arrangements, revise details, and maybe just lower your expectations a tad. By the 26th you should have reason to feel more optimistic, when lovely Venus starts to transit your birth sign.

Aquarius

November in a Nutshell: Keep your inner rebel under control

If ever there was a month to toe the line and watch your manners, this is it. That means playing the role you are paid for, no matter how frustrating it seems at times. No, not to the point where you lose sight of your personal values, just enough to slide through sticky situations. Got it?

Pisces

November in a Nutshell: Dream a little dream…

It’s only a matter of days now until your ruling planet Neptune turns into direct motion in your birth sign. This could herald a period where more and more people come to value the more spiritual element of life, the need to reach out and help, showing empathy and understanding. Pisces feels right at home with this, it resonates with your soft heart.
