How to Boost your Child’s Immune System Naturally!

By Noha Abu Sitta

Whether it is the beginning of the school year, the winter season or spring-time, children are frequently getting sick. Have our children’s immune systems become weaker throughout the years? Is there a natural way we can improve their immunity? As your child grows, the immune system will come to maturity. coronavirus

Nevertheless, too many visits to the doctor are a sign of a weak immune system that needs to be boosted. There are a few factors that affect your child’s immune system in either a positive or negative way!coronavirus

Let’s explore the immunity-boosting factors first:

Food:

We all know that vitamin C is good for your child’s health. Vitamin C exists in all citrus fruit, guava, sweet pepper, chili pepper, broccoli, pumpkin, strawberry, kiwi, cauliflower, pineapple, and mango.

But there’s more, you can actually plant a doctor inside your child’s body through certain kinds of food! These fall under two categories: foods rich in Phytonutrients and omega-3.Phytonutrients, (also known as phytochemicals), are natural chemicals that exist in various fruits and vegetables.

“Phyto” refers to the Greek word for plant, so the word literally means “plant nutrient”. When you serve your child food or drinks rich in phytonutrients, you are helping his/her body fight disease and build its’ immune system properly.

Since phytonutrients are responsible for the vibrant colors in fruits and vegetables, offer your kids a different color range of vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Serving your child a variety of colors in his food and drink is a good way of ensuring that you are serving a variety of phytonutrients the body needs to fight various kinds of diseases starting from a common cold all the way up to cancer! coronavirus

Try to serve your child 5 colors per day! If your child is a picky eater a few of these could easily be hidden in a salad bowl if he doesn’t mind salad, soup, or juice!

Examples of foods rich in phytonutrients are:

  • Yellow: sweet pepper, apples, lemons, bananas, corn, pineapple.
  • Orange: pumpkin, oranges, carrots, sweet pepper, peaches, mangoes, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe.
  • Red: tomatoes, chili, sweet pepper, apples, beetroot, watermelon, pink grapefruit, strawberries, pomegranate, red onions, radish.
  • Green: apples, grapes, all herbs (such as rosemary, dill, basil, parsley, etc), spinach, molokhya, kale, green tea, cabbage, broccoli, okra, green beans, Swiss chard, avocadoes, cucumber, marrows.
  • White: radish, turnips, garlic, cauliflower, white onions, white beans, yoghurt.
  • Blue/Purple: blueberries, prunes, plums, grapes, cabbage, eggplant.

Foods rich in omega3 are natural anti-oxidants, which also boost the body’s immunity as well. Examples of food rich in omega3 are:

  • Fish (especially wild salmon and sardines). covid 19
  • Flaxseeds, also known as Linseeds. These must be consumed after grinding into a powder, otherwise our stomachs can’t digest the husk, and will thus not reap any benefits. coronavirus
  • Walnuts. covid 19

What about foods that decrease the efficiency of your child’s immune system?

Food high in sugar and artificial sweeteners and unhealthy fats (junk food) decreases the efficiency of children’s immune system. Other factors that do so are: covid 19

  • Excessive use of antibiotics
  • Not getting enough sleep
  • Exposing your child to smoke and too much dust
  • Not getting enough exercise covid 19

De-Cluttering with Alia Malek

Drowning under a pile of things you rarely use, and don’t need? Meet Alia Malek, Egypt’s very own Marie Kondo. With a wave of her magic wand (a.k.a two highly efficient staff), Alia can rid you of all the mental and physical baggage that comes with living in a cluttered and overfilled space.

Alia claims that de-cluttering made such a massive impaact on her life, she was inspired to set up the service to give others the same benefit. She ran us through the process, and it seems as easy as 1-2-3! Check the end of the article for a step by step video. De-clutter your wardrobe

  • A home visit with Alia and her team, where she helps the client decide what should stay and what should go.
  • Lifestyle consultation: organizes a plan that really works for the client.
  • Sets a system to help the client live more efficiently with items they actually need.

Top 7 Items Cluttering Your Home

Clothes, books, papers, remotes, cables (who doesn’t have a box full of cables that don’t seem to go with anything?), kitchen utensils, and decorative items.

5 De-Cluttering Tips

  • Fold your clothes vertically and stack them vertically to save space.
  • Much like the Marie Kondo method, Alia’s system usually includes creating a space, usually a box or container for every item in your home. Nothing should be left lying around with no purpose.
  • Store everything in labeled drawers, storage boxes or baskets to help keep everything in order.
  • De-clutter by category rather than location.
  • Discard anything that doesn’t bring you joy or doesn’t make you feel good, keep items that you absolutely love!

4 Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sentimental things are the hardest to go through, so always leave it until the end.
  • Giving up halfway.
  • Tackling a whole room without a place to put the things you still need.
  • Don’t consider that you are wasting money by ridding yourself of items. You should be able to get much more use out of the things you really love and keep.

A clutter-free lifestyle is something to embrace, and once tried there will be no go back. For ideas on how to recycle and donate your unwanted items, check out our suggestions here. Someone can surely make good use of them!

ALMAH: Recycled Fashion for a Good Cause

ALMAH Farah Loma
Processed with VSCO with k1 preset

By Zainab AbdulAziz

Farah Lokma is a 26-year-old Egyptian-Syrian creative fashion lover with a mission. Inspired by her stint working as a business development coordinator at the Egyptian Clothing Bank, she initiated ALMAH, a project to make use of the fabric from excess donated clothing by collaborating with designers and brands. ALMAH Recycled Fabrics ALMAH Farah Loma

Most of the commercial clothing donations received by the Egyptian Clothing Bank are not suitable, including the fact that 80% of donated items are women’s clothing, which creates a significant deficit in men’s and children’s clothing. ALMAH was created to generate profits by recycling these excess quality fabrics and clothing items into profit to cover this deficit by funding the production lines of clothing items such as galabeyas, abayas and tracksuits that are truly suitable for the intended cause.

Almah Recycled Fabrics

CWM: What has been the most exciting part of building the brand so far? ALMAH Farah Loma

Farah Lokma: I find the entire project extremely exciting; it gives me the opportunity to discover my creative side within a development project. Seeing people’s reaction to ALMAH has also been gratifying, we were initially worried Egyptians weren’t ready to accept the idea of ‘recycled clothing’. But we are very pleased and grateful with the amount of positive support ALMAH has gotten so far.

What is the design and production process like?

Farah Lokma: The process begins by working with the collaborative designers to come up with a theme for a collection. From there, the designer picks out the materials they want to work with from a large range of excess fabric donated to the Egyptian Clothing Bank.

The designer works up some sketches then we filter through and choose our favorite ones. We then make any necessary tweaks to make sure the entire collection represents both ALMAH and the collaborating designer.

How does ALMAH fit into the current fashion scene? Almah Recycled Fabrics

Farah Lokma: The majority of the fashion industry has become what we call “fast fashion” – a couple of decades ago, a brand would release two collections per year, now fast fashion brands release 32 collections on average per year. This type of consumerism comes at a very high price to our environment and for the rights of factory workers.

Most people often think they’re simply just buying affordable clothing, but workers in garment factories in developing countries are paying the price for this cheap clothing. The more conscious you are with your shopping, the more pressure that will put on brands to produce their items sustainably. You can start small by simply investing in higher quality clothes that will last longer in your closet or buying second-hand and recycled clothing.

 . .

Tell us more about ALMAH’s profit donations and what the initiative achieves.

Farah Lokma: ALMAH’s profit from each collection will be used to fund new and suitable clothing for the less privileged in Egypt. The reason I chose to work with the Egyptian Clothing Bank is the extreme attention to detail and consideration of the beneficiaries served. The bank ensures that every household on its’ database receives clothing that is suitable to their needs and size.

Providing a less privileged person with a suitable attire isn’t just about putting a smile on their face during festive occasions like Eid. In reality, you’re creating an opportunity for this individual: whether it’s a man who wants to be considered for a better job position, or a woman who wants to finish her secondary education. In many of these cases, the obstacle standing in their way is the lack of suitable attire to aid in their quest for opportunities.

How do you envision ALMAH growing in the future?

Farah Lokma: ALMAH is currently in the process of becoming its own entity. Although it was initially a small project we began under the Egyptian Clothing Bank, the response we received was surprisingly favorable, so we’re turning ALMAH into a social enterprise and aiming to collaborate with more local designers, and hopefully one day international designers.

O’Sole Mio Comes to Citystars

The success of the first O’Sole Mio branch at the Nile City Towers Mall led to a beautiful second location in Citystars Mall for handmade Italian comfort food. The assortment of dishes made with top quality ingredients makes for an authentic and mouthwatering Italian dining experience.

Signature Drinks & Dishes Sampled

Their signature is the pizza! With over 20 types of pizza on the menu, this is an Italian restaurant that knows how to stay true to its roots. More restaurant reviews – https://bit.ly/2Pw3g6Z

To start, we had the complimentary bread basket with crispy house-made breadsticks, accompanied by olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We decided to try the lemonade cocktails and were pleasantly surprised with the Limonata Peach and the Limonata Watermelon, two drinks that were refreshing, tasty, and perfectly sweetened. We then ordered appetizers and chose the Calamari Frutti and Mozarella Frutti, both simple dishes done with excellence.

The appetizers were fresh, hot, and deliciously crunchy. For mains, we opted for the Risotto di Mare and a Diavolo pizza. Trying to sample the most O’Sole Mio iconic menu items, we were excited to see that the risotto came with a hearty portion of seafood and was creamy and delicious. The Diavolo pizza was beyond all expectations and so perfectly made that we immediately wanted to order another one. A classic Tiramisu and Raspberry Cheesecake with a cinnamon mocha and cappuccino ended our delightful meal.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

On our next trip to O’Sole Mio, we will definitely try more of the pizza menu as the pizza was incredible — hands down one of the best pizzas in the city! We will also need to sample more pasta items like Stuffed Ravioli, Lasagna, and Gnocchi. The beverage menu includes a wide range of soft beverages including milkshakes, smoothies, fruit juices, cocktails, and hot drinks.

Décor & Ambience

O’Sole Mio is laid-out with couches, bright pops of color on the walls, and modern Italian elegance sprinkled throughout. Despite being in a busy shopping center, the ambiance is incredibly relaxed and inviting. The restaurant feels as if it is hidden away in an exclusive area where guests can enjoy a relaxing meal.

Clientele Mix: The clientele is mixed but with an upscale vibe.

Hot Tip: Not only does O’Sole Mio serve delicious lunch and dinner items but they also have a full breakfast menu! Why not switch things up and try a tasty breakfast before a busy day of shopping?

Price Range: For the menu quality and portion sizes the prices are incredibly affordable.

Young Artist Esraa Zidan Paints the BIG Picture

Young artist Esraa Zidan has hit the local art scene with a resounding splash. Her exuberant paintings have a commonality; larger ladies. Not larger than life; just cheerfully chubby, delightfully rotund, pleasingly plump. Rubens would be in his element. Egyptian Artist Esraa Zidan

The immediate and positive response to Zidan’s work has been a validation of her decision to relate her own personal journey. In an age where plastic surgery and digital enhancement have created ‘ideal’ clones, it takes courage to step outside of the mold. Zidan has done this, with creative energy, undisputed talent and self-celebratory humor.

CWM: Although your paintings do not mirror the common Instagram ideal, their success sends a clear message. Did you expect so many people to relate?

It was because of Instagram and all its unrealistic beauty standards that I started thinking that I was not beautiful myself.  I considered plastic surgery here and there in order to become beautiful. Then after doubting myself for long time, I started a collection of paintings that portray women in a very different form than on Instagram. The most important point is that I portrayed them feeling happy and satisfied!

The feedback I got was overwhelming. I could hardly believe the amount of positive messages I got from women telling me how much they were suffering to accept how they looked, how desperate they were to be categorized as beautiful by so-called Instagram beauty standards. Only then did I decide to go on with my collection, I want every woman to feel accepted, satisfied and confident about how she looks.

What advice would you offer anyone facing self-image issues?

The only fact I know is this, if God wanted to create us all looking exactly the same, He would have done it. We are supposed to look different; we are supposed to be unique. And the world will see you as beautiful only if you start seeing yourself as beautiful first.

In today’s art industry, how can young artists receive support for their work? Egyptian Artist Esraa Zidan

To be honest, it is not easy at all to get noticed as an artist in Egypt. You need to make a phenomenal effort or have good connections. As for me, I didn’t have either. But what got me the needed attention was the audience who sincerely liked my artworks and kept asking galleries about my paintings. Then the galleries started noticing me.

But from my side now, I am trying my hardest to give support to young artists and to help them become noticed, to shorten the path so they can start to live completely for their art.

The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

By Zainab AbdulAziz

We have all heard about the health benefits of fasting during Ramadan, but very few of us – with the exception of super dedicated athletes – think to incorporate fasting into our everyday lives. However, Dr. Nourhan Kandil is here to prove otherwise! Dr. Kandil has studied everything there is to know about intermittent fasting during her time at the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and she is a huge fan of the eating plan, which boasts a number of health benefits and can help you tackle those pesky problem areas.

CWM: What are the principles of intermittent fasting?

Dr. N.K: Intermittent fasting is not a diet, it’s a lifestyle and a pattern of eating. You change the timings of when you eat, not the quantities of what you eat. So, you eat within a window of 8 hours and then you stop eating entirely for a window of 16 hours which includes your sleeping hours. You can drink as much as you want within that 16-hour window, with the exception of drinks that include milk and/or sugar. Focus on zero calorie and zero glycemic index drinks. You don’t want to raise your insulin levels at all during these 16 hours.

How effective is it and what are some common weight gain issues does intermittent fasting address?

In my opinion, this is one of the most effective and successful dietary plans anyone can try because one of the benefits is that it can be used alongside other programs like Keto or plant-based diets.

Intermittent fasting can really help overcome common weight gain, and the problem of concentrated fats, especially in the belly area. This can commonly occur due to insulin resistance. Insulin is so important because it’s the hormone responsible for regulating your blood sugar, which in turns fuels our cells.

The reasons and side effects of insulin resistance can vary from genetic factors or eating too much sugar and carbs. Another factor to bear in mind is that as cells increase in fat, the less sensitive you become to the regulatory effects of insulin. People who are affected by insulin resistance are always hungry and specifically craving sugary food.

Not addressing insulin resistance can create a cascade of unfortunate health problem. You can be a risk for diabetes, that stubborn pot belly, or ovarian cysts which many women suffer from and can affect your chances of getting pregnant.

In fact, when you address the root cause of this insulin resistance, you will find a lot of these side effects disappearing and you’ll be able to conceive easier and live a healthier life. You can still overcome the unhealthy side effects of insulin resistance and not pass on this trait to further generations.

Is it safe for all age groups?

Yes, it is safe for all age groups, except anyone under-16. Under-16s should not do intermittent fasting.

Can anyone follow this, or are there medical and health conditions that preclude it?

Anyone with diabetes or experiencing blood sugar problems shouldn’t fast unless advised by a doctor on how to do it safely.

How long can this diet be used for safely?

This type of eating pattern can safely be carried out for a lifetime. It can be done for 16 hours, 18 hours, or 20 hours – there are no hard and fast rules, you can do intermittent fasting for only two days a week if you wish.

Are there any dangers involved?

There are some studies and trials that showed that some people experience constipation, usually due to a lack of maintaining good water intake during eating hours. Others may not have been aware of pre-existing medical conditions, so trying intermittent fasting triggered some feelings of fatigue and discomfort. However, it’s important to note that there is no danger caused directly by intermittent fasting itself unless there is a preexisting condition to be taken into consideration.

The 3 Top Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

  • Intermittent fasting helps with battling the issue of insulin resistance by reducing insulin and helps with weight loss while maintaining muscle mass.
  • Muscle mass not only gives you shape, but it also stores your blood sugar in a healthy way to allow your cells to transform energy properly.
  • It increases your growth hormone, which maintains your muscle mass and reduces insulin, which is responsible for storing fats.
  • Improves your immune system and reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and supports healthy heart function

Hoda Rashad: Honest Content Delivers Messages of Value to Millennials

Do you really know what your kids are watching, what is feeding their minds – day in, day out? It could be time for a wake-up call according to Hoda Rashad, Content Platform Founder of Honest Content.

This YouTube vlogger comes with impressive credentials and a strong background in education. After making a TED X presentation in Cairo, Hoda transitioned from being a teacher to launching an online vlog. There were so many people out there with worthwhile messages to share, but they lacked the technical know-how and time to go online. They needed a platform. A YouTube channel named Honest Content was launched to broadcast content from all around the world covering a variety of topics and featuring role models – real examples from people who could have a positive influence.

Effectively Reaching Young People Through YouTube

  • As early as 2014, global research showed that around 40% of female and 43% of male online users consumed daily vlogs. They depended on individual influencers on YouTube to get their information.
  • If the over 35s feel a disconnect with the way they think, and the way millennials see things, it because the younger group sources its information through laptops and other devices.
  • YouTube is the third most used platform globally, with around 5 billion videos being viewed daily.
  • Younger viewers are more dependent on this medium, and equally, more easily influenced.

Age Groups that Follow Youtube

The main range is from 18 to 49, but primarily YouTube videos are watched by those under 32. Many in this age group do not even own a television.

Other Social Media Platforms Influential in Shaping Opinions

Instagram and Snapchat are on the rise, as are TikTok, and IGTV from Instagram. YouTube is still holding a strong viewer base though.

How can Platforms be Used in a Positive, Informative and Socially Useful Way?

… Enter Hoda Rashad and Honest Content!

  • Whoever discusses a specific topic, should ideally be a qualified expert on that topic.
  • The main goal should be to disseminate information with a vision for a greater good and use your voice for the betterment of the community.
  • Even if the channel is being used for entertainment, it should be of some benefit to the viewers.

The Dangers in Millennials Blindly Consuming What They Read or See Online

Hoda Rashad advises we must be aware that online advertisers aim to place their messages on the most widely viewed content. It doesn’t matter what that content is, in fact the most viewed content is viral or sensational in nature. The internet is descending into a void, where it keeps disseminating this information. It keeps pushing out messages that may not be of value, which may not have content that improves society. This is a time of extreme connectivity, and a time of complete disarray. There is a cycle through which advertisers are rewarding the content being viewed solely based on figures, not the message being given out. Viewers may equate real value of content with popularity, without looking at what drives it.

There is always the argument put forward by Hollywood that violence in movies does not necessarily encourage violence, that showing negativity is not always a negative message, such as horror movies with evil. But we must always look for balance. This is missing at present; there is a lack of regulating bodies to assess content that is loaded directly online, although YouTube has restrictions regarding swearing and pornographic material. Often there is no fact-checking or in-depth analysis of the effect of material. That is the danger zone of immediate publishing, content just goes directly from one person’s mouth to the viewer.
