After the debut and the huge success of the single “Driver’s License” that dropped back in January, who knew that Olivia Rodrigo would come back with an even more powerful album?
By Karen Emad
“Sour”, Rodrigo’s first album, broke the global Spotify record for the biggest opening week for an album by a female artist. The album portrays a wave of complicated feelings such as heartache and being deeply in love.
What things other than love and a broken heart could “Gen Z” relate to? The answer would probably be nothing. Olivia Rodrigo
How It All Started
The young singer and actress has always shown her passion for music through competing and winning talent shows with her fierce performances ever since she was only four years old.
In recent interviews, she revealed that her musical inspirations are Lorde and Taylor Swift and how she would love to make music with them since she grew up listening to their music.
Before her music career started, Rodrigo had already stolen people’s hearts in the Disney Channel show “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”, which was on screens in 2019. She played the role of “Nini Salzar”.
It was after signing with Interscope and Geffen Records in 2020 that fans awaited her music especially after the singer posted videos of her playing the piano and singing during quarantine.
Why Teenagers Relate to Her Songs
“Driver’s license” is definitely the songwriter’s big break and as she stated that it “has made her life shift in an instant”. Three songs, all of which charted in the top three of the US Billboard Hot 100, preceded “Sour”.
The first single “Driver’s License” topped the charts for nine weeks straight. Following that was “Déjà vu” which became a hit on Tiktok and stole the third spot on the Billboard 100. Finally, the last single before the drop of the album, “Good 4 u” which has a significant rock vibe to it, took second place on the Billboard 100.
Rodrigo conveyed the rollercoaster of “sour” feelings that teenagers tend to go through with those eleven songs which is what inspired the title of her first album. Both boys and girls have been sharing how they can relate to her incredible lyricism and how the entire album illustrates all their mixed emotions perfectly.
Moreover, after all the success “Sour” has witnessed, the world was yet stunned by the 18-year-old’s breathtaking and emotional performances at the Brit Awards and on Jimmy Fallon as well, where she performed her hit singles.
It has only been two months since the album’s release nonetheless everyone is now impatiently waiting for new music. We can’t wait to see what the young star still has to offer and until then we will be streaming “Sour” on repeat.
