Beeja in Zamalek: Egyptian Cuisine with Nile Views

Beeja in Zamalek

By: Mariam Elhamy

Beeja is a new spot in Zamalek, located in the Biota complex, (formerly Sequoia and Left Bank) which aims to be one of the best places to eat near people living in Central Cairo. Beeja is Hindi for ‘beginning’, an appropriate name given the rebirth of this much-loved corner of Zamalek. Future plans for Biota complex include a hairdresser, a gym and an all-day brunch eatery. Beeja’s menu offers Egyptian cuisine with a few Lebanese dishes, and could potentially be an option if you’re looking for a romantic dinner spot in Cairo.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled Beeja

Signature dishes include the Bechamel Pasta, Tajen Lesan Asfour with Meat Cubes, Tajen Okra with Meat Cubes, Oven Baked Rice with Pigeon and Oven Baked Rice with Chicken.

We made our way for iftar and ordered the set menu. For starters we had the soup of the day, Lesan Asfour, stuffed vine leaves, crispy Kobeba, fresh Baladi Salad and classic Tahini Salad.

Then, for the main dishes we tried the Djaj Mesahab and the Mixed Grill, which included kebab, kofta and shish tawook all well seasoned and juicy with a side of satisfying brown rice and potato wedges.

To wash it all down quenched with Ramadan drinks (hibiscus and sobia) and for dessert, we had Crème Caramel served with banana slices and caramel syrup, as well as Om Ali made of a soft ro’aa mixed with nuts, sweetened hot milk, topped with warm cream and pleasantly baked with a golden brown surface.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

Mini Shawerma, Mini Hawawshi, Mixed Meat Feteer, and Sweet Feteer and Zalabya for dessert.

Beverage options include hot and soft drinks, fresh juices and smoothies.

Décor & Ambience

The décor is clean and modern with a wild edge of nature to it, the seating area is really spacious and most tables have a clear view of the Nile. The Direct Nile view open area is decorated with huge potted wild trees and the indoor area is surrounded by transparent glass so that you can still see the view. The view is perfect at dawn time!

Clientele mix: Great for family gatherings, groups of friends and couples.

Price range: Moderate, the view is worth it.

Hacks for Pore Tightening

The size of your pores is primarily due to genetics, however, excess oil, dirt and aging can all affect the appearance of pores. Here are some simple DIY hacks that can reduce the appearance of your pores and tighten the elasticity of your skin.

Egg Whites Mask

1 large egg – whites only

3-4 drops fresh lemon juice

Separate your egg and place the white in a bowl. Add the fresh lemon juice and whisk the ingredients. After washing and drying your face, apply the mask by rubbing it all over in an upward circular motion.

The mask needs to dry for at least 15 minutes. After it becomes a bit hard and completely dry, rinse off with warm water and then use your preferred moisturizer.

Ice Cube Method

To minimize the appearance of pores, add an ice cube to your nightly skin-care routine. After cleansing your face, rub an ice cube all over until it melts. This slightly torturous method is said to tighten pores and give a clear complexion.

The Egyptian Women’s Polo Team

Polo may be known as ‘The Sport of Kings’, but the ladies who took to the pitch last month at the second El Gouna Beach Polo Tournament proved that the fairer sex can wield a mallet with just as much style and steely nerve as any male player. Although all-female teams can be traced as far back as the Tang Dynasty in China, this local Egyptian team named Nefertiti first formed a few months ago, winning its first match with a score of 2-1 against women from the Police Union Club in Cairo last March. Headed by 23-year-old Farah Awadalla, the 10-member Nefertiti team mainly ranges in age from 16 to 23 years, with the oldest member being a fit 56.

Polo may be known as ‘The Sport of Kings’, but the ladies who took to the pitch last month at the second El Gouna Beach Polo Tournament proved that the fairer sex can wield a mallet with just as much style and steely nerve as any male player. CWM: Is this the only women’s team in Egypt?

F.A.: Yes, we are the only women’s team, although as individuals we play for other clubs, such as Kings Polo and the Police Club. I also play for the Gezira Club.

How did you get into this sport?

Polo is a very patriarchal sport, and Egypt is quite a patriarchal society, so it was not easy to get into. I was fortunate to have the support and encouragement of my parents. My father Ibrahim Awadalla is also a polo player; he backed my efforts in forming Nefertiti, which played a big part in creating our team. Many girls had tried to play informally in the past, but with Nefertiti we have made team games possible for them.

How often do you compete?

We don’t compete that often, apart from playing in the recent El Gouna Beach Polo Tournament, we won the Queen Ulvia Cup a few weeks ago.

Do you plan to compete regionally or internationally?

At this stage, we have only competed locally in Egypt, but our sights are set on competing internationally by 2020. We are training hard for that.

Polo must be quite an expensive sport, so do you have sponsors to help cover costs?

I do own my own horses, but the girls playing for the Police Club are sponsored by the Police and only pay a monthly fee. When we represent Egypt internationally our costs will be covered by the Egyptian Polo Federation.

How do you train a polo pony?

It takes years to train a polo pony. Of course, the first consideration is selection of a pony that meets physical criteria. We actually use Argentinian bred ponies, as the Argentines have been leaders in the game for many years and have developed an ideal breed. The pony must learn to stop and turn quickly, and to be able to withstand physically crashing into other horses, as happens with the ‘ride off’. This training all comes after the pony has been broken in for normal riding, and has become used to carrying a rider and responding to commands.

How experienced does a rider need to be to play?

Polo demands a high level of expertise. A rider must be at a point where the actual riding is instinctive and second nature, with great communication with the pony. This leaves the rider free to follow the line of the ball, defend and strategize within the game. If you are not a strong, experienced rider it can become dangerous for you, the other players, and the ponies.

Do you have fitness training, as well as actual, practice sessions?

We all have our personal fitness programs, and practice sessions are primarily to enhance, diversify and strengthen our game skills. We generally ride our ponies almost every day, so that keeps both horse and rider fit.

How is the game played?

Polo is played to a very strict set of rules, as this is essential for maintaining the safety of the pony and rider. It is considered to be the second most dangerous sport in the world. Each game is divided into four ‘chukkas’ of seven and a half minutes each. The key rule to follow is that the line of the ball must be unobstructed; to block it would constitute a foul. All the rules are there to ensure safety, that is the key element, and we follow them to a ‘t’.

Future plans?

There is a competition coming up in Italy in May, but before we venture into the international field we need to be sure of our skill level. That is what we are working on.

Crave’s New Branch in Mall of Arabia

Life is getting even better for Sheikh Zayed residents. Crave is now open in the new extension of Mall of Arabia, offering an exciting menu and a perfect space to chill out with friends and family.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

There are some innovative new items on the already comprehensive international fusion menu. Dishes to head for are Chicken Dukkah Salad, Taco Salad, Chicken Dynamite, Wild Mushroom and Truffle Oil Pasta, Steak Pizza, Philly Cheese Bowl Sandwich, Pepper Soy Beef, Sriracha Salmon, and the perennial favorite, Shrimp Konafa.

The sun was setting as we ensconced ourselves next to the picture window overlooking the greenery of The Park, great timing for a cool drink. It was a tough choice, as there were so many tempting options, but the fresh ginger and berry laden Wild Booster and Strawberry Basil Crush hit the spot perfectly.

We planned to try some of the new dishes, and didn’t take long to tuck into a huge shared dish of Chicken Dynamite, along with an old favorite, Shrimp Konafa. They both delivered on flavor and presentation, from the light, non-greasy exterior to the succulent chicken, tempura vegetables and shrimp. The two different dipping sauces; spicy, cheesy Dynamite and a sweet chili, set the dishes off to a “t”.

Please note that portions are really large, so we were happy to share, saving space for the Pepper Soy Beef and Salmon Sriracha which followed. The beef was tender filet, and teamed up with colored bell peppers and onion in a rich peppery soy sauce, it was a delight. The basmati rice came accented with finely chopped spring onion and zucchini, creating a perfect balance for the spicy sauce.

The salmon came paired with a smooth pea purée, sautéed vegetables and strips of cucumber and nori, giving it a true seafood aroma. This all barely left room for the highly recommended steak pizza, which was a shame, as it was excellent. You can’t beat the combination of hot-from-the-oven pizza, with a true homemade crust, laden with gooey provolone cheese, mixed peppers, garlic confit, artichoke and spinach, all topped with slices of tender fillet steak.

After a break to chat and enjoy the relaxed vibe and well-curated playlist we succumbed and agreed to share dessert. Anyone feeling calorie-deprived should opt for the Lotus Konafa Bomb with Cheese. Served hot, with a massive scoop of lotus ice-cream on the side, as well as a jug of decadent caramel Lotus sauce, it was an early reminder of treats in store for Ramadan.

Other Menu Options that Appealed

We would love to come back for the salads and explore the pizza options a bit further. But everything on the menu looked great.

Décor and Ambience

The understated interior is effortlessly chic. Pared back taupe and beige; leather teamed with wood, and black iron work supporting contemporary industrial lighting, it is very on trend. Spread comfortably between indoor and outdoor areas, Crave overlooks The Park, giving the feel of being close to nature. We loved the playlist of female vocals, some old, some new, but all good listening. Suffice it to say, the service was exceptional. We would expect nothing else from Crave.

Clientele mix: Urban professionals, early 20s upwards. Smart, on-trend groups of friends and couples.

Price range:  Moderate, and super value considering the portion sizes.

Lotus at Steigenberger Pyramids Hotel

Lotus at Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo

When it comes to location, Steigenberger Pyramids Hotel is close to unbeatable. A few minutes stroll from Giza Pyramids, and facing the nearly completed Egyptian Grand Museum, the 5–star property offers spectacular views and gracious hospitality, it’s probably one of the best places to eat near the pyramids. Great for tourists, you may say. We will let you in on our secret then: Lotus restaurant offers some of the best cuisine we have come across in quite a while. Michelin-star standard, beautifully presented and worth a drive from any part of town, this gem is our latest discovery.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Both the à-la-carte menu and the rich buffet have outstanding dishes, and we learned that the Shrimp with Seafood Pâté and Beef Filet with Balsamic Glaze are extremely popular items.

We were easily tempted by the refreshing cocktails on offer, and cooled down with an Electric Iced Tea, a Raspberry Piña Colada and a Strawberry Virgin Mojito before even thinking about food. The deceptively innocent-looking Electric Ice Tea and Raspberry Piña Colada had quite a kick to them, be warned, and we are sure the barista will be happy to divulge the mix.

Nicely relaxed, we still snapped to attention when our starter arrived. A plate so perfectly crafted, it was a shame to cut into it. Succulent pink shrimp, sea bass pâté neatly encased in smoked salmon, a dainty round of vegetables and pistachios in aspic, a shrimp pâté lollipop, all set off with a cheese and beetroot tuile. It tasted every bit as good as it looked. We followed up with a Sweet Potato Soup and a small selection of the many appetizers on the buffet, but still left space for the generously proportioned Angus Beef Filet that arrived with a flourish. Tender, and cooked to just the right point, the beef was set off by a rich balsamic-based demi-glace reduction and came accompanied by a creamy potato purée, eggplant and zucchini. Again, we just had to try a small portion of sea bass from the buffet, along with a little osso bucco, in order to prime ourselves for our next visit.

Dessert was another triumph, a small tower of precisely tempered chocolate, encasing sponge, fruit and an indulgent chocolate mousse. A shame to destroy such perfection, but hey, we knew that it would be too good to miss out on. We also couldn’t resist raiding the dessert buffet for a few choice Oriental and French pastries, they were far too tempting. Our conclusion? Lotus simply must be added to the list of reasons to visit the spectacular Giza plateau, so please take note.

Other Menu Options that Appealed: The buffet was one of the most inviting we have seen, with the same attractive presentation and attention to detail as the à-la-carte menu. We would love to explore it further.

Lotus at Steigenberger Pyramids CairoDécor and Ambience

Situated a few steps from the lobby area, Lotus is spacious and airy, with attractive lighting features setting off the lotus shaped columns throughout. The feel is relaxed with just the right level of activity to keep it interesting. With tourism surging again, there was a multicultural ambience that we enjoyed.

Thumbs up: Paper straws are used throughout, respecting the environment.

Clientele mix: On our visit we saw mainly foreign visitors, along with a few locals who had been smart enough to discover the great cuisine.

Price range: Mid-range upwards, but worth the splurge.
