Architect and graffiti artist Mohamed Radwan has created a burst of energy and color on the North Coast with his eye-catching pop art-inspired mural. It is hard to miss and has become quite a talking point. Cairo West Magazine caught up with him to get the inside story.
How did the idea of creating the Graffiti Mural come about?
Sea Hub (a North Coast shopping destination), wanted to do something on the wall, but they didn’t have a fixed idea, they contacted me, and I pitched to them the idea that we do a huge graffiti mural about women’s empowerment, and they liked the idea and agreed to that.
What is the message you are trying to convey?
I wanted the mural to have a social cause and value, so I suggested the idea of using the massive wall (70 meters long by 5 meters high) to advocate for women’s empowerment and women’s rights, but due to the nature of the place we had to do it with a hip (pop-art) approach.
What has public reaction been like so far?
So far, the reactions are very good and supportive, both on social media and in real life. Girls and even some guys are taking photos with the mural and posting them to social media, with nice captions. I visited a couple of times after the mural was done, and the interaction there was nice.
What new projects do you have in the pipeline?
I am currently working on a couple of projects, one in the informal settlements with an urban development NGO, and the other is a commercial project in a sports club.
